Why do dogs lick their noses?

Have you ever wondered why dogs have wet noses? It is because a thin layer of wetness (mucus) on their noses helps to absorb scent chemicals in the air. This means dogs have a much more sensitive sense of smell than humans. This is also why dogs lick their own noses, to keep them wet and in fine form to pick up all the smells around them!

Eagles’ eyes are the same size as those of a human

Most birds (such as eagles) have fantastic sight, that can be up to eight times better than most humans. Amazingly, even though an eagle is only about 5kg in mass, its eyes are the same size as a humans.

What do these eyes mean to you?

Sight takes up about 20% (or one fifth) of your brain power. That’s because your brain has to turn all the signals from your eyes into an image. The average person blinks twelve times each minute.

The Sea Women of Jeju Island

These “Sea Women” (“Haenyeo” in Korean) are female divers in Jeju who dive for seafood and seaweed. Some of these divers are over 80 years old.

A short flight or ferry ride from the South Korean mainland is the magical Jeju Island.
Jeju has a massive dormant volcano, called ‘Hallasan’. It is at the centre of the island and is the tallest mountain in South Korea, at almost 200m.

Issue 16 of CUBIC Magazine (for curious kids) is all about KOREA

We look at a the history of Korea, the Korean War, as well as Korean culture, food, sports, cities, countryside, beliefs and much more.

This issue is also packed with vocab-relevant word-searches and a maze, as well as great features and articles about North and South Korea.

Is this relevant for a child? We believe so, in part due to the recent rise in Korean culture and its influence across the world, as well as geo-political events concerning North Korea and the parallel to the East-West German divide during the Cold War.

North & South Korea and the DMZ

The Korean war has not officially ended, so we can’t really say it’s over yet. Russia and China have helped to re-build the North, and the USA and Europe have helped to re-build the South.
American troops are still in South Korean near the DMZ, although many South Koreans don’t like having them in their country any more.
What will happen next? No one knows, but we all hope for a peaceful reunification one day.

A Beautiful Bright Orange Korean Hanbok

This picture shows a woman wearing a traditional Korean dress called a “Hanbok”. Men also wear hanbok, and if you have ever watched a historical Korean drama on Netflix you should know what we mean!

There’s something new to learn for everyone

We received this Testimonial: Aparna from Palo Alto, California

There’s something new to learn for everyone. It picks a new concept every issue and presents it from multiple angles that make even deeper concepts accessible to young children. For example the issue on colours was great for explaining the bio sensitivity of our eyes and also understanding light and wavelengths. My son particularly enjoys the puzzles and word scrambles.

We don’t dumb anything down, instead we try to elevate a child’s thinking with stunning images, great articles, quizzes, puzzles and more.

A curious, engaged child will develop their own thoughts and ideas, without being ‘told’ what to think, or how to solve problems.

CUBIC Magazine is A5, 48 pages and not only printed on FSC paper (Forest Stewardship Council), but also delivered in a recyclable plastic envelope.

It’s not glossy or riddled with cartoon characters.

We’re so proud of CUBIC Magazine that we suggest to keep each issue after reading because it is not a throw-away item (despite being recyclable).

We don’t shy away from dealing with important issues such as mental health in sports and protecting your ears when you listen to music.

With our hugely combined experience of writing courses and delivering them worldwide, we know what works. The founders Neil and Kim have children of their own who help contribute ideas us what they’d like to see in a magazine.

Why A5? So it fits into your child’s backpack or bedside draw.

Triple Trouble - A CUBIC Magazine Story

In Issue 17 we’re launching a story specially written for CUBIC Magazine, called “Triple Trouble”, which is all about Heidi, Jess & Byron in their seaside town in Devon.

Chapter One is called “The Smelly Treasure” and is published in Issue 17. Here’s an excerpt:

The shrill end-of-school bell rang out at Appledore Primary School, followed by the noisy bustle of excited students. Children hastened through the school gates in a lively blur of book bags, lunchboxes and backpacks. Some met their patient parents in the playground, others hopped onto their bikes or the school bus. The three friends, Heidi, Jess and Byron, however, readied themselves for a short walk home through their beautiful North Devon village.

“I can feel a storm coming,” exclaimed Byron, his violin case swinging from his hand, “It’s like a sixth sense!”.

Heidi scoffed, pulling on a fluffy scarf. “Don’t be silly. Ms Mia taught us the five senses in year three and predicting the weather definitely wasn’t one… It is windy though.”

“Orchestra practice was amazing! I’m so excited for our performance,” Jess exclaimed as they walked together down the narrow, cobbled lanes towards their road. The three friends passed brightly painted cottages of pastel blues, pinks and oranges, which stood out sharply against the dark blue brooding rainclouds that hung forebodingly in the sky.
