You might think it is a recently developed sport but in fact it is one of the oldest team sports, dating back to the 6th century BC.
Historians think it was originally developed in the Middle East by cavalry.
It has been called the “Sport of Kings” – probably because you need enough money to support a whole team of people and horses and to have land to practice on. Typically it was only Kings who could afford to run such teams.
