Why is Jupiter’s moon Europa so interesting?

Scientists are very interested in Europa because they think there are huge oceans of water beneath its surface. In fact, the Hubble Space Telescope has seen plumes of what is probably water being ejected into space, perhaps in a similar way to magma (lava) being ejected into the air on planet Earth from a volcano.
What is REALLY interesting, is that where there is water, there could also be life. If there is life on Europa, it won’t be in the form of aliens and spaceships, it will be in the form of microbes and tiny organisms as we have in our own oceans here on Earth.

It would take HOW LONG to fill an Olympic pool from a regular tap?!

An Olympic-size swimming pool contains two and a half MILLION litres (or 2,500,000) of water.
If you tried to fill such a pool from a normal water tap, that would probably fill five litres per minute, it would take;
2,500,000 / 5 = 500,000 minutes,
…which is 8,333 hours, which is 347 days,
…which is almost a YEAR! So, how do you think they do it?

How many molecules are there in one drop of water?

It’s hard to tell exactly because drops of water are all different sizes. But, on average there are this many: 2,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. This number is of course impossible to imagine.

The Colourful Milkweed Locust

As locusts go, the Milkweed Locust is less drab, and even quite colourful. One amazing fact about locusts is that they can eat their own body weight in plants EACH DAY. That’s like you eating more than 130 large potatoes every day!

Why are beehives built in hexagons?

Bees make their beehives in hexagons because it’s the next strongest shape after circles. The problem with circles is that they don’t tessellate - i.e. there are gaps between the circles. This doesn’t happen with hexagons.

We received this Review: Derek in Swindon (UK)…

My son is really enjoying the magazine. I asked him why and he came up with this:

I like CUBIC because it is something to look forward to every month. I get to learn new stuff like popular movies, Korean and science (like why food tastes change).

As a parent, I’m impressed with the magazine. It’s encouraging reading of factual material, varied in content each month and it keeps inspiring new areas of interest.

We don’t dumb anything down, instead we try to elevate a child’s thinking with stunning images, great articles, quizzes, puzzles and more.

A curious, engaged child will develop their own thoughts and ideas, without being ‘told’ what to think, or how to solve problems.

CUBIC Magazine is A5, 48 pages and not only printed on FSC paper (Forest Stewardship Council), but also delivered in a recyclable plastic envelope.

It’s not glossy or riddled with cartoon characters.

We’re so proud of CUBIC Magazine that we suggest to keep each issue after reading because it is not a throw-away item (despite being recyclable).

We don’t shy away from dealing with important issues such as mental health in sports and protecting your ears when you listen to music.

With our hugely combined experience of writing courses and delivering them worldwide, we know what works. The founders Neil and Kim have children of their own who help contribute ideas us what they’d like to see in a magazine.

Why A5? So it fits into your child’s backpack or bedside draw.

I’ve overheard him relaying the facts he’s learnt to friends

We received this Review: Lucy in London…

My 10 year old son avidly reads each issue cover to cover on the day it arrives, and I’ve overheard him relaying the facts he’s learnt to friends. Hope he’s doing the same at school!

We wanted something that would be fun for our grandson

We received this Review: Catherine from Edinburgh

We found the magazine online, firstly by looking at lists of recommended magazines, and then narrowing it down to CUBIC or AQUILA, so looked at both websites for these magazines more closely. We thought that CUBIC was better aimed at my grandsons age than AQUILA, on the basis of the samples online. Also, we wanted something that would be fun for our grandson but not lead to endless demands on his parents for help with activities and projects.
