Polo - A Ball Sport Played on Horses, What?!

We haven’t included polo in the Ball Sports issue of CUBiC Magazine but it is worth talking about.

You might think it is a recently developed sport but in fact it is one of the oldest team sports, dating back to the 6th century BC.

Historians think it was originally developed in the Middle East by cavalry.

It has been called the “Sport of Kings” - probably because you need enough money to support a whole team of people and horses and to have land to practice on. Typically it was only Kings who could afford to run such teams.

The Longest Drive was Five One Five

When a golfer hits the ball from the tee (little piece of white plastic) that’s called the “drive” and the the first stroke to start every hole.

Michael Hoke Austin has his the ball further than anyone else and he did it in a professional tournament in 1974 in the USA.

Hoke hit the ball 515 yards which is an amazing record.

To give you an idea of how far that is, it would take you about five minutes to walk that far.

Never Stop Questioning

The important thing is to never stop questioning - Albert Einstein.

A useful quote for all children and adults alike. It’s also important to make the distinction between asking questions and being skeptical. A child can be full of questions without the slightest hint of skepticism or cynicism.
